Prof. Neil Spooner (Sheffield U.)

Professor Neil Spooner is a world-leading expert in dark matter detection and neutrino physics, with over 30 years of pioneering work experience that has included the development of new technologies involving gas-based detectors, scintillators, and bolometric devices. His developments include ground-breaking work and contributions towards building direction-sensitive particle dark matter experiments and the development of liquid argon technology.

Within the Centre, Spooner will provide a wealth of leadership and experience across all aspects of dark matter direct detection, including the operation of an underground laboratory. He is the Spokesperson for the CYGNUS directional direct-detection experimental collaboration- one of the intended future installations for the SUPL site.

With extensive experience in student supervision and mentoring, as well as outreach activities ranging from presentations to politicians and industry, to the BBC , Professor Spooner will add these valuable skills to the Centre’s capabilities.
